Forests, deserts, wetlands, peaks, rivers – who conjures up these places with their pen? Before the inexorable advance of technology, along with the expansion of urban and virtual worlds, our lexicon is shrinking. And with the loss of words comes the loss of emotions associated with open spaces in nature. Who gives voice to the lizard, algae, the wind? To the

stone, the oak, the shepherdess?

Nature literature sounds almost like a response fired back at the system, a literature that forcefully rises up to express the power of areas that display exceptional biodiversity, the elements shaping and sculpting them, the nonhuman beings inhabiting them alongside our own species.

It is now a question of repairing connections and sparking dialogue once again, with the idea of surviving together. This is the challenge being taken up today by nature writers as avant-garde authors. Avant-garde, indeed, because to write nowadays about nonurban spaces involves not only inventing new and surprising words but also adopting different,

unusual, and possibly uncomfortable points of view. Lending an ear to those who know how to connect with the earth, water, animals. Learning their ways of perceiving the world. Entering the particular world of a snail, a hawk, or a mushroom, understanding them in their ecosystems. Accepting that peripheries can become centers and allowing those centers to

shape our futures.

Nature writing demonstrates that each place is home to all beings, human and nonhuman, a home that deserves to be put into words in both its kindness and its cruelty, its bounty and its bane. It is in this spirit that our Nature Writing program has scheduled the following three events, Mineral connection, The Animal factor, and The Spirit of the mountain.
