Event in English
Every first Thursday of each month, from 7 to 8 pm, a writer in residence opens a window on his or her work, universe and motives, in a free form of intervention. An hour of carte blanche to share, followed by an aperitif.
What does it mean to be seen, unseen, and by whom? With each of his two novels, Black Buck and This Great Hemisphere, as well as his forthcoming novel, Pure Ox, in 2027, Mateo Askaripour has featured richly drawn characters who, though initially, are largely —even literally— viewed invisible by society, eventually, through choice and circumstance, become hypervisible, forever changing the course of their lives and the world at large.
This Thursday in residence will explore the many intersections that animate Askaripour’s work, such as the individual vs. the worker, second-class citizenship, family, and race, as well as what it means for all of us to claim our own stories rather than give in to prevailing narratives. The talk will also examine how, through the act of creation, we can better identify life’s many latent themes and gain clarity on what truly matters to us.
Biography
The American writer Mateo Askaripour was born in 1991. His professional life at a startup when he was in his twenties provided a wealth of comic material for his first published novel, Black Buck (Mariner Books, 2021), a satire of the work culture in corporate America underscoring the systemic racism there. It was an instant success and figured on the New York Times bestseller list. He was a winner of the National Book Foundation’s “5 Under 35” Prize in 2023. His work has been translated into multiple languages, including French, Spanish, and Portuguese. This Great Hemisphere, his second novel, was published in 2024 by Dutton Publishing. His third novel, Pure Ox, is slated for publication in 2027, also by Dutton/Penguin Random House.
