Biography

The Hungarian journalist, playwright and writer Miklós Vámos has published over forty books. His work has been translated into several languages and has won a number of awards. The Xenophobe’s Guide to the Hungarians was cowritten in English (Oval Books, 1999); The Book of Fathers (Other Press, 2009) is an English version of his best-known Hungarian novel, Apák könyve, translated by Peter Sherwood. After earning a PhD from the Faculty of Law and Political Science of ELTE, he worked as a scriptwriter at Objektív Filmstudio and went on to cofound and head a publishing house, Ab Ovo. He has also served as the East European correspondent for the weekly The Nation, hosted for a number of years a succession of popular cultural shows on Hungarian television, and taught at several prestigious American universities.
