Biography

Born in Hauts-de-France, Maryla Laurent is literary translator and professor at the University of Lille, where she is the head of the Polish Department. She wrote two PhD theses, one on translation studies and another on Polish literature under the oppression of Stalin and his totalitarian project. A number of her books deal with literature and literary translation as a means of intercultural communication. A member of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences and a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres, she has translated some forty works from the Polish, including the French version of Olga Tokarczuk’s The Books of Jacob. That translation was awarded the 2019 Prix Laure Bataillon.
