Heather Cleary

Heather Cleary is a translator and writer living between New York and Mexico. She holds a PhD in Latin American and Iberian cultures from Columbia University. She has authored translations of numerous works including The Dark by Sergio Chejfec (Open Letter Books, 2013), which was shortlisted for the ALTA National Translation Award; and Pink Slime by Fernanda Trías (Scribner, 2024), winner of the English PEN Award. In 2021, she published The Translator’s Visibility: Scenes from Contemporary Latin American Fiction (Bloomsbury), an essay on how the narratives of translation can challenge intellectual property norms. Her work has enjoyed the support of the Queen Sofía Spanish Institute, English PEN, and the National Book Foundation. She is currently writing a hybrid novel about translation and betrayal titled False Friends.
